During one of our Sacramento outreaches, we met Dennis on the streets in need of some of life’s most basic necessities. He was barefoot, without proper clothing for the cold, and facing circumstances that could easily leave anyone feeling forgotten.
Our team was able to provide Dennis with a brand-new jacket, shoes, socks, and other essential items. But something unexpected happened when he noticed one of the blankets we had brought to distribute.
Dennis looked at the blanket and shared that it reminded him of his grandmother.
In that moment, the blanket became more than something to keep him warm. It stirred a memory of someone special, bringing a sense of comfort and connection in the middle of a difficult season. Of course, we made sure Dennis received that blanket.
But the greatest gift shared that day was not something we carried in a bag.
As we spent time talking with Dennis, we shared with him the love and hope found in Jesus Christ.
We reminded him that no matter where life has taken him, he is seen, he is valued, and his life still matters to God.
That day, Dennis made the decision to accept Jesus Christ into his life.
We came prepared to meet physical needs, but God opened the door for something eternal. Dennis walked away with warm clothing, shoes on his feet, a blanket that carried a precious memory—and, most importantly, a newfound hope in Christ.
Moments like this remind us why we go into the community. Sometimes compassion looks like a jacket. Sometimes it looks like a pair of shoes. Sometimes it looks like stopping long enough to listen to someone’s story.
And sometimes, in the middle of an ordinary outreach, God creates an extraordinary moment that can change a life forever.
Changing lives, one heart at a time…
